The Ohio State Buckeyes and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish face off in Week 1 of the 2022 college football season. Who has the advantage in their head-to-head meetings?

The 2022 college football season is underway, but there are some huge games scheduled on Saturday, Sept. 3. One game just so happens to be between two of the most well-known programs. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on the Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus.

Both teams are ranked in the top five of the AP Top 25 preseason list. This will also be just the seventh time that the Buckeyes and Fighting Irish face off against each other. Let’s take a look at their head-to-head history.

Ohio State vs. Notre Dame head-to-head history

Ohio State currently holds a 4-2 series lead over Notre Dame in their previous meetings. In fact, the Buckeyes have won their previous four meetings against the Fighting Irish.

Here are the scores of their previous six meetings:

  • 1935: Notre Dame wins 18-13
  • 1936: Notre Dame wins 7-2
  • 1995: Ohio State wins 45-26
  • 1996: Ohio State wins 29-16
  • 2006: Ohio State wins 34-20
  • 2016: Ohio State wins 44-28

That’s right, the only wins that Notre Dame has in this head-to-head series came in the 1930’s!

The last two games between these two programs, ironically, took place in the Fiesta Bowl. As you can see, the Buckeyes won big both times to end their seasons on what has been a norm for them — hoisting a trophy.

Notre Dame will look to bring an end to their four-game losing streak on Saturday night. They have a new head coach in Marcus Freeman, who is a former linebacker who played for the Buckeyes program. That’s right, Freeman’s first season opener as a head coach will be against the team he used to play for. A win over them will no doubt propel them in the rankings.

As for Ohio State, they look to maintain their top four status for the remainder of the season to clinch a College Football Playoff spot. From there, the Buckeyes look to win the CFP National Championship for the second time.
