Patrick Mahomes lost his most dangerous target when Tyreek Hill was trade to the Dolphins but he didn’t miss a beat in the Chiefs opener against Arizona.

On Sunday, the football world watch Aaron Rodgers struggle without his longtime No. 1 receiver Davante Adams.

Anyone thinking Patrick Mahomes would have similar troubles without Tyreek Hill was sorely mistaken.

The Chiefs opened the season against the Cardinals and made it very clear that the offense is still elite.

The first thing to remember is that Hill may have departed but Travis Kelce is still an unstoppable force in this offense and Mahomes knows exactly how to find him.

That’s doubly true when in range of the end zone because there aren’t many red zone threats quite as effective as Kelce.

Kelce led the team with eight catches for 121 yards and a touchdown. Even if defenses don’t have to account for Hill anymore, the tight end is a mismatch problem.

Nor is Kelce the only tight end Mahomes can utilize in the endzone. Here he is proving his connection with Jody Fortson can also yield points:

Mahomes threw five touchdowns on the day, one to Kelce, one to Mecole Hardman, one to Fortson and two to Edwards-Helaire.

He also got production out of new wide receivers JuJu Smith-Schuster and Marquez Valdes-Scantling. The former had six catches for 79 yards. The latter came away with four for 44 yards.

The more chemistry the quarterback builds with those two, the more dangerous this offense could get.

Mahomes doesn’t need Hill to continue making those kinds of plays.

To be fair, Hill’s absence will surely be felt in ways this season. However, Mahomes has more than enough talent and the supporting cast around him is strong enough for the offense to move on.
