Cowboys could be overlooking an easy trade to replace Dak Prescott

With Dak Prescott expected to be sidelined for a significant time with a hand injury, the Dallas Cowboys need a new signal-caller, and a familiar option is out there. 

Sunday Night Football could not have gone any worse for Dak Prescott and the Dallas Cowboys. A thumb injury to their star quarterback and a 19-3 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Prescott suffered the injury late in the game, and team owner Jerry Jones confirmed the news after the game that Prescott would need surgery and would be out for 6-8 weeks.

Now that begs the question, who should step in as signal caller for the team? There are many options, including backups Cooper Rush and Will Grier and possible trade candidates like Jimmy Garoppolo.

But another option might be getting overlooked, and he currently resides in Pennsylvania. Yup, that would be Mason Rudolph of the Pittsburgh Steelers. It would be a low-risk move in terms of what to give up for him, and he does have some familiarity with Cowboys wide receiver James Washington dating back to their college days at Oklahoma State.

For a team with lofty expectations, including winning the division and getting back to the playoffs, losing a franchise quarterback like Dak Prescott does nothing except damage those hopes severely. However, if they can find a suitable quarterback to help guide the ship while Prescott is out, all is not lost.

Granted, Rudolph doesn’t precisely drop jaws, but he has played in this league, is young, and has done reasonably average. 16 touchdowns with 11 interceptions and a passer rating of 80.9 is not the worst thing to have, and Dallas would be wise to take a chance.

It wouldn’t cost all that much, given how Rudolph is not being used in Pittsburgh now, and Dallas needs a signal caller.

Rush did a good job last year in Minnesota, but how long can anything like that last? Consistency is critical at the quarterback position, and the Cowboys need to find a suitable answer for Prescott and fast. If not, the season could be well over before it started.
