Even Jimbo Fisher can’t stand to watch another Haynes King start at Texas A&M

Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher appears to be making a quarterback change from Haynes King to Max Johnson.

After losing at home to Appalachian State last week, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher is reportedly replacing Haynes King as his starting quarterback in favor of LSU transfer Max Johnson.

The Battalion reported on Thursday that Johnson will be named the starting quarterback for the must-win, non-conference home game vs. No. 13 Miami. Texas A&M plummeted all the way to No. 24 after shockingly losing at home to Sun Belt power App State. King was the Aggies’ starter entering the season, as well as for the first game and a quarter last year, but he is just not the guy.

Johnson started games for LSU the two previous seasons. He is the son of Super Bowl champion quarterback Brad Johnson and is the nephew of former Georgia and Miami head coach Mark Richt.

This was the right move for Texas A&M to make all along, but is it too little too late for the Aggies?

Texas A&M rumors: Jimbo Fisher is going with Max Johnson over Haynes King

Even if the Aggies hold on to beat Miami at home, it does not seem like Texas A&M will be able to live up to unrealistic expectations once again. The Aggies may have had the No. 1 recruiting class in 2022, but they have been little more than an 8-4 team in the SEC West outside of the COVID year. Texas A&M plays in the same division as Alabama, but they are now recruiting like Alabama.

Entering the year, Texas A&M had three quarterbacks on the roster capable of starting games. King was seen as the most mobile of the three. Johnson had the most starting experience and is your prototypical passer. While he is still raw, Conner Weigman is seen as the future of the Aggies’ attack. By going with the runner over the thrower in King, it may have cost Texas A&M its season…

Texas A&M still has not played an SEC opponent this year, and will not do so until facing rival Arkansas in the Southwest Classic. As fate would have it, the Hogs are in the top 10 and may be the best team in the SEC West not named Alabama. Even if the Aggies beat Miami at home, it is so hard to see them being any better than a 10-2 team through the regular-season slate of games.

Johnson does give the Aggies the best chance to win vs. Miami, but even that may not be enough.
