3) New York Yankees

The New York Yankees are a first-place team and they will likely get a bye in the Wild Round. As of now, the Tampa Bay Rays will face the Guardians in the Wild Card round and if Tampa Bay “upsets” the Guardians, then the Yankees would face the Rays in the ALDS.

The Yankees have been much better in the last couple of weeks but they still have some serious issues that could lead to them being a victim of an upset.

Their offense has been awful with the exception of Aaron Judge. Since August 1, the Yankees are hitting .224/.300/.368, which is 25th, 23rd, and 25th in that span. In that same span, Aaron Judge is hitting .346/.491/.737. Judge can’t be the Yankees’ entire offense.

They will be getting players off of the IL that could help them … but they not be great. Some players, like DJ LeMahieu and Anthony Rizzo, have not been on the IL for long.

But Harrison Bader has not played a single game for the Yankees yet and his last MLB game was in June. Reliever Miguel Castro hasn’t pitched in the majors since early July. Nor has starting pitcher Luis Severino. Zack Britton hasn’t pitched all season. They could be a bit rusty.

To top it off, what have the Yankees done in the postseason in recent years? They haven’t made it to the World Series since 2009 for a reason.
