By Scott Rogust
Kyler Murray helped the Arizona Cardinals overcome a 23-7 deficit to defeat the Las Vegas Raiders 29-23.
The Arizona Cardinals had a season opener to forget, as they lost 44-24 to the Kansas City Chiefs. In Week 2, the Cardinals were trailing 20-0 to the Las Vegas Raiders in the third quarter. But there was no worries for Arizona, as quarterback Kyler Murray singlehandedly put the team on his back, leading the team to overtime.
Arizona picked up the 29-23 win after forcing a fumble on Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow, which cornerback Byron Jones recovered and returned for a touchdown.
With the Cardinals now 1-1 on the year, thanks in part to Murray, take a look at the three most insane plays made by the quarterback.
3. Touchdown run at the buzzer
Let’s start things off with the play that helped set up the Cardinals for an overtime-forcing opportunity.
On fourth-and-goal with five seconds remaining in regulation, Murray stood in the pocket, and noticed an opening on the left side of the end zone. Using his speed, Murray reached the ball out to break the plane, which was not necessarily needed, considering how open it was. That cut Arizona’s deficit to 23-21.
2. Successful two-point conversion pass to A.J. Green to force overtime
Now, we get to the play that officially forced overtime.
Cardinals fans, and media alike, were left dumbfounded that the team would take a delay of game penalty on their two-point conversion attempt, especially after they took a timeout. As it turns out, that decision was not costly whatsoever.
Murray stood in the pocket, and found wide receiver A.J. Green in the back of the end zone The catch was secured, and the game was tied 23-23 with no time left in regulation.
1. Kyler Murray two-point conversion after Darrel Williams touchdown
This is probably the most insane play of the 2022 NFL season.
Arizona cut their deficit to 23-13 after a three-yard touchdown run by Darrel Williams. Looking at the scoreboard, head coach Kliff Kingsbury went for two points. After hiking the ball, Murray scrambled to the left side of the field, then to the right, as he looked for an opening in the end zone. That was when he spotted an opening, and he made a dash for the end zone, and he was successful.
Words can not do this play justice. Take a look for yourselves.
According to NFL Next Gen Stats, Murray ran a total of 84.9 yards on that two-point conversion attempt alone!
The Cardinals signed Murray to a contract extension for a reason, and that is his ability to make some insane plays to help lead them to victories. This win over the Raiders does not happen without Murray.
