A former Yankees fan favorite spoke way too soon about Aaron Judge in 2017, and he owes him an apology for underestimating his potential.

Former New York Yankees fan favorite Didi Gregorius spoke too soon about Aaron Judge back in 2017, Judge’s second season in the majors. A tweet posted by the Yankees is resurfacing following Judge’s 60th home run milestone, and Gregorius was quoted as saying: “Congrats rookie, but call me when you hit 60.”

In 2017, Judge had an incredible season and hit 52 homers. At the time, Gregorius joked about remaining unimpressed with Judge’s numbers.

Clearly the tweet was worth saving, as five years later, Judge has managed to close the eight-homer gap and best Babe Ruth’s historic 60-homer season. Though there was no doubt that Judge was capable of achieving such an incredible feat, there’s a huge difference between being capable of breaking history and actually doing so.

In another explosive season, Judge hit the 60 home run milestone and remains just one homer away from tying the single-season record set 61 years ago.

Yankees slugger Aaron Judge may break the franchise’s single-season home run record

Sixty-one appears to be a lucky number for the Yankees and the AL East. Roger Maris set the franchise and division single-season home run record of 61 homers in 1961. Now, 61 years later, Judge will likely set a new record for both individual MLB players and his storied franchise.

He’s hit nine homers so far this month, and with 15 games left of the regular season, he’ll most likely hit at least two more. At this point, would be more surprising if he didn’t.

Judge is making himself a good Triple Crown candidate as the 11th player in MLB history to lead the league in batting average, home runs and RBIs. St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Paul Goldschmidt has been in conversation for the Triple Crown, but Judge is making his case stronger every day.

The Triple Crown is an elite achievement with only 10 players in league history earning it. To earn one, a player has to complete a season leading the league in homers, batting average and RBIs.

Judge has achieved a lot in his seven-season career, and it appears that this is just the beginning for him.
