The 2022 Presidents Cup is here with Team US vs. Team International taking to Quail Hollow. We have the teams, format, TV schedule and all you need to know.

While it might not have the history or even the competitiveness of the Ryder Cup, the 2022 Presidents Cup should bring about a ton of excitement with Team US taking on Team International this week in Charlotte at Quail Hollow Club from Sept. 22-25.

The teams were turned upside down a bit by both LIV Golf defectors from the PGA Tour not being allowed to participate in the competition — thus removing the likes of Cameron Smith, Joaquin Niemann, Dustin Johnson, and more from the equation — and even Will Zalatoris suffering a back injury that won’t allow him to compete.

Typically, the United States team has been dominant in this event over its history with the last non-win coming all the way back in 2003. However, the International team came close in the last event in 2019, so anything is possible, even if the US is heavily favored again.

From the teams to records to how to watch, we’ve got you covered with everything you need to know for the 2022 Presidents Cup.

US Presidents Cup Team 2022: Players and record

  • Captain: Davis Love III
  • Scottie Scheffler: Rookie
  • Patrick Cantlay: 3-2-0
  • Xander Schauffele: 3-2-0
  • Sam Burns: Rookie
  • Justin Thomas: 6-2-2
  • Tony Finau: 0-1-3
  • Jordan Spieth*: 8-5-1
  • Collin Morikawa*: Rookie
  • Max Homa*: Rookie
  • Billy Horschel*: Rookie
  • Cameron Young*: Rookie
  • Kevin Kisner*: 2-0-2

* denotes a Captain’s Pick

While some of the rookies like Scheffler and Morikawa already have Ryder Cup experience, this will be their first time playing in this event. However, the talent of this team is truly wild as there are 10 players who are all ranked inside the Top 20 of the latest Official World Golf Rankings. There’s a reason that the Americans are such heavy favorites.

Fred Couples, Zach Johnson, Steve Stricker, and Webb Simpson will serve as assistant captains for Love III.

International Presidents Cup Team roster 2022: Players and records

  • Captain: Trevor Immelman
  • Hideki Matsuyama: 6-7-4
  • Sungjae Im: 3-1-1
  • Tom Kim: Rookie
  • Corey Conners: Rookie
  • Adam Scott: 16-22-6
  • Mito Pereira: Rookie
  • K.H. Lee*: Rookie
  • Sebastian Muñoz*: Rookie
  • Christiaan Bezuidenhout*: Rookie
  • Taylor Pendrith*: Rookie
  • Si Woo Kim*: 1-2-0
  • Cameron Davis*: Rookie

* denotes a Captain’s Pick

Without the likes of Smith, Niemann or Ancer available, there are some concerns about the strength and overall lack of depth with the International team. There are a lot of rookies who have limited-to-no experience in this format and, on top of that, the highest-ranked player on the team in terms of OWGR is Matsuyama at just No. 17.

K.J. Choi, Geoff Ogilvy, Camilo Villegas and Mike Weir will serve as assistant captains for Immelman.

Where is the 2022 Presidents Cup being played?

The event will be hosted at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte, NC, a regular stop on the PGA Tour. It traditionally hosts the Wells Fargo Championship annually on the Tour’s schedule, though that was moved to TPC Potomac in 2022 because of the Presidents Cup. Quail Hollow also hosted the 2017 PGA Championship, won by American Justin Thomas.

One interesting note is that the most famous and most difficult stretch of this course called the Green Mile is often the No. 16-18 holes. For this event to try and ensure that those holes will play a factor in most matches, the course has been rerouted and those holes will serve as No. 13-15 for the competition.

Presidents Cup format, schedule: Format by day

There will be 30 separate matches between Team US and Team International across the four-day span of Sept. 22-25 with every match being worth one point. A win gives that team a point while a loss incurs no scoring for the team. Meanwhile, a tie would make the point halved and each team would receiver 0.5 points. 15.5 points secures a victory for either team. The teams can tie, unlike in the Ryder Cup, if they finish Sunday at 15-15.

Three separate formats are used for the matches, two that use pairs of teammates and then regular singles match play. The two four-player formats are Foursomes and Four-ball.

Foursomes are also known as alternate shot with players deciding which teammate will tee off on odd holes and who tees off on even holes. The players then alternate shots, as the name suggests, until the ball is in the cup.

Four-ball is also known as best ball. All four players in each group will hit a tee shot and play the hole themselves. The teammates will then take the best score between the two playing partners on a given hole as the score for their team and then have a traditional match play format.

Here is the schedule for the formats as laid out by US Captain Davis Love III:

  • Thursday, Sept. 22: 5 Foursomes matches
  • Friday, Sept. 23: 5 Four-ball matches
  • Saturday, Sept. 24: 4 Foursomes matches in the morning, 4 Four-ball matches in the afternoon
  • Sunday, Sept. 25: 12 singles matches

The pairings for these events will not be announced until the night before as the captains make their selections for the matchups.

Past Presidents Cup results, records, history of competition

As mentioned, the United States has traditionally dominated the Presidents Cup as they come into the 2022 event. Team US holds an 11-1-1 record overall in the event with their only loss coming in the first event that was played internationally in 1998.

Here is a full breakdown of the results since the first Presidents Cup in 1994.

  • 1994: US wins 20-12 (Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – Gainesville, VA)
  • 1996: US wins 16.5-15.5 (Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – Gainesville, VA)
  • 1998: International wins 20.5-11.5 (Royal Melbourne Golf Club – Melbourne, Australia)
  • 2000: US wins 21.5-10.5 (Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – Gainesville, VA)
  • 2003: Tied 17-17 (Fancourt Hotel and Country Club – George, South Africa)
  • 2005: US wins 18.5-15.5 (Robert Trent Jones Golf Club – Gainesville, VA)
  • 2007: US wins 19.5-14.5 (Royal Montreal Golf Club – Montreal, Canada)
  • 2009: US wins 19.5-14.5 (Harding Park Golf Club – San Francisco, CA)
  • 2011: US wins 19-15 (Royal Melbourne Golf Club – Melbourne, Australia)
  • 2013: US wins 18.5-15.5 (Muirfield Village – Dublin, OH)
  • 2015: US wins 15.5-14.5 (Jack Nicklaus Golf Club Korea – Incheon, South Korea)
  • 2017: US wins 19-11 (Liberty National Golf Club – Jersey City, NJ)
  • 2019: US wins 16-14 (Royal Melbourne Golf Club – Melbourne, Australia)

The event moved from even to odd years after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in 2001 altered the Ryder Cup schedule. There was also no 2021 event due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
