Chicago Cubs catcher Willson Contreras got perhaps his last farewell from Wrigley Field as a member of the home team.

Contreras is one of the last remaining members from the Cubs 2016 World Series team. He’s an All-Star catcher and one of the more recognizable players in Chicago.

However, that doesn’t mean he fits into the team’s long-term plans. The Cubs tried to trade Contreras at the deadline, but to no avail. They also tried to sign him to a contract extension in offseasons past, also with little luck.

Contreras and the front office seem to disagree on his financial value. Yet, when it came time to trade him or risk losing their backstop this offseason, the Cubs overvalued him.

In the end, Jed Hoyer and Co. were fine with the possibility of losing Contreras this winter. As long as they extend him a qualifying offer, they’ll receive a conditional first-round pick in return.

Cubs fans fish Willson Contreras farewell, if this is really it

“The fans appreciate how hard I work,” Contreras said, per The Athletic. “I’m a guy that gives 100 percent, and they see the effort.”

Cubs fans gave Contreras the goodbye he doesn’t necessarily covet on Sunday afternoon.

Where could he land next? Well, several of the teams interested in him at the trade deadline could also be free agent suitors. The Giants, fresh off a questionable Joey Bart experiment, make sense. The Mets aren’t thrilled with James McCann thus far. And if the Astros don’t re-sign trade deadline acquisition Christian Vazquez, expect them to come calling.

For now, Contreras remains a career Cub, and for good reason. It’s been a long season of farewells for he and Jason Heyward — two players from a 2016 World Series team that made history, and ended one of the worst streaks in professional sports.
