Jerry Jones clarifies Cowboys QB ‘controversy’ with Dak Prescott’s return looming

Jerry Jones clarifies the Dallas Cowboys’ quarterback situation developing between the injured starter Dak Prescott and the great play from backup Cooper Rush of late.

While the Dallas Cowboys are blessed to be 3-1 through their first four games, owner Jerry Jones made it abundantly clear that a healthy Dak Prescott will start at quarterback over Cooper Rush.

Prescott injured his thumb in the Cowboys’ season opener vs. the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Rush has more than held his own filling in for Prescott, as the former Central Michigan star has yet to lose a game in a Cowboys uniform. While Prescott did take Tony Romo’s job in 2016 under similar circumstances, Jones clarified that it will indeed be Prescott starting over Rush once he is healthy.

We all knew this was the case, but Jones simply cannot help himself with a microphone in his face.

Jones is pleasantly surprised how well the Cowboys have played with Rush filling in for Prescott.

Dallas is a game back of the arch rival Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East, the last undefeated team in the NFL this season.

While 3-1 is a fantastic mark for the Cowboys, given all that they have gone through from an injury perspective thus far, the New York Giants are also 3-1 and the Eagles are 4-0. Even if the Washington Commanders have gotten off to an awful start, the NFC East looks to be way more competitive than most of us could have anticipated. The Cowboys still have to run the gauntlet…

Because the NFC is not as strong as the AFC right now, Dallas can afford to take its time in letting Prescott fully recover from his injury. Rush has played well in relief of him, and his teammates have responded favorably. But let’s all make this perfectly clear: There is no quarterback controversy brewing in Dallas, no matter what Jones says in a press conference or over the radio.

The good news for the Cowboys is they have not skipped a beat with Rush out there. They know they can trust him in a big spot later down the line, if it ultimately comes to that. The bad news is Rush will be a hot commodity this offseason. He will be a free agent, and may perhaps get a real shot at being a starter somewhere else on a non-contending team. Rush is not a clipboard holder.

At the very least, the Cowboys have one of the better backup quarterbacks in football right now.
