Caleb Plant scores a one punch knockout over Dirrell
Caleb Plant scores a huge knockout out on the Wilder vs. Helenius undercard over Anthony Dirrell.
The co-main event for the Deontay Wilder vs. Robert Helenius fight was the super middleweight title eliminator between former champion Caleb Plant (22-1) going up against Anthony Dirrell (34-3-2).
The fight wasn’t exactly a boxing classic, as there wasn’t much action happening. It was more so each man having their moments with Plant getting the best of the exchanges. The fight was a little rough, and the referee had his hands full and was looking to deduct a point if Dirrell continued with his antics.
Midway through the fight, Plant’s coach Stephen Edwards told the former champion to ignore the crowd and continue to box. Plant did that, but in the ninth round, there was a sequence that occurred at mid-range where he did an up and under, which saw him land a huge left hook that knocked out Dirrell. The referee did not even bother to count as he knew Dirrell had enough. Even after the fight was called off, Dirrell needed to be attended to by medical personnel.
Caleb Plant puts an exclamation point with a one punch knockout over Anthony Dirrell.
After the fight, Plant had this to say “This win felt good. You’ve heard about how much he hates me, but my head and my heart is what won me this fight. I was in control the whole time. My coach told me to stay patient and ease in and that’s what we did. Then, boom! I’m ready for whatever. I’m going to spend some time with my family, but then I’m ready for the biggest fights that we can make.”
Plant needed something big after falling short against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. This was more than a statement, and he has catapulted himself into a massive fight against either David Benavidez or Jermall Charlo. Whichever it is, let’s hope that fight gets made for the early part of next year.
