The San Diego Padres shocked all of baseball by beating the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NLDS, three games to one. Manny Machado loved every minute.

Take it to the streets, San Diego!

The Padres rallied against a team that has had their number in just about every fashion for the last decade. Perhaps now the Dodgers will consider San Diego their actual rival.

A series of miscues on the Dodgers end put San Diego in favorable territory for a comeback. The Padres crowd, witnessing its first playoff games in quite some time at Petco Park, rallied for the cause.

In what would become the decisive seventh inning, Padres manager Bob Melvin acknowledged that the crowd noise gave his team life:

“It was deafening. Honestly, when we took the lead it was like an avalanche. And at that point in time, it really felt like there was no way we were going to lose,” Melvin said.

Padres, Manny Machado take celebration to the streets

Manny Machado is at the core of the culture San Diego preaches. He was the first major free-agent acquisition to choose the Pads in quite some time, and he did so despite having a number of more competitive suitors. Yet, perhaps Machado saw this coming, to a certain extent.

In a postgame interview with FS1, Machado let loose, cursing on live television in a message to fans everywhere.

That’s the sign of a man who knows exactly what he got himself into.

Trading for the likes of Juan Soto and Josh Hader surely helped matters, as AJ Preller’s aggressive deadline moves paid off in a big way. Preller hasn’t been shy in terms of trading away top prospects for immediate upgrades, and Hader and Soto are clear examples of that model.

But Machado was here first, before San Diego turned into a winner, so you can’t blame him for letting the fans know he was right all along.
