Clemson football held a 37-game winning streak in Death Valley coming into their matchup with Syracuse and fans weren’t handling being on upset alert well.

Even though the Syracuse Orange arrived in Death Valley with the same undefeated record as the Clemson Tigers, the odds were heavily in favor of Dabo Swinney’s team. They were anywhere from 13.5-14.5 point favorites in the game and brought a historic 37-game home winning streak into the matchup.

Someone forgot to tell Dino Babers and the Orange about that narrative, though.

With the game tied at 7-7, it was Syracuse that landed the first haymaker. D.J. Uiagalelei and the Clemson offense were deep in the red zone but then coughed up the ball, which the Orange then picked up and took all the way to the house to take the lead.

Garrett Shrader then led a fantastic touchdown drive to take a 21-7 lead, which Clemson cut into with a field goal just before halftime. But down by 11 points, the Tigers were firmly on upset alert through one half of play and fans were not taking the situation well.

Syracuse puts Clemson on early upset alert, Tigers fans freak out

Some fans on message boards immediately went to the tried and true scapegoat of the refs as they started blaming them for the early score in the game, with one poster even suggesting that Clemson has secretly agreed to join the SEC already and ACC refs are taking it out on the Tigers.

Other fans went right to Twitter to voice their own frustrations and conspiracies about the game.

We haven’t seen the calls for Cade Klubnik in several weeks with Uiagalelei having played extremely well. But with multiple turnovers and some poor plays outside of that, fans were unhappy with him.

If there is a silver lining, the Tigers actually outgained the Orange in total yards in the first half. But the only stat that matters at this stage is the final score and Clemson will have to pull themselves up by their bootstraps to turn that in their favor and keep their College Football Playoff aspirations alive.
