Quite a number of eyes in the combat sports world, let alone the boxing world, will be focused on Glendale, AZ, where Jake Paul and Anderson Silva will throw down in their promoted 187-pound, eight-round battle.
Paul is looking to make the former UFC middleweight champion the latest former MMA fighter to taste defeat at Paul’s hands in the boxing ring.
After defeating AnEsonGib and former NBA star Nate Robinson in his first two pro boxing matches in 2020, Paul’s 2021 saw him knock out former Bellator and ONE welterweight champion Ben Askren and score a pair of wins (one by decision, one by KO) over former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley.
Though Silva is better known for his time in the cage, he did compete in two boxing bouts during his time in MMA, losing to Osmar Luiz Teixeira in 1998 and defeating Julio Cesar De Jesus in 2005.
After his UFC release, Silva fought in two boxing bouts in 2021, defeating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by decision and scoring a first-round knockout of Tito Ortiz. He also fought an eight-round exhibition with Bruno Machado in May.
The pay-per-view portion of the card will also feature a double-debut cruiserweight bout, featuring the professional boxing debuts of former UFC fighter Uriah Hall and former NFL running back Le’Veon Bell.
Mikhail Varshavski, better known as the YouTuber “Doctor Mike,” will also make his pro boxing debut on the pay-per-view, taking on Chris Avila, a UFC and Bellator veteran who defeated Anthony Taylor on the Jake Paul vs. Tyron Woodley 2 card ten months ago.
