The New Orleans Saints need to commit to a rebuild, yet the rumored trade price on Alvin Kamara shows they have absolutely zero definitive direction.

Alvin Kamara called out the New Orleans Saints for a lack of discipline and Tweeted out a gif that sparked trade rumors. While it looks like the Saints are going to hold onto Kamara unless they get an unheard-of trade offer, they might need to rethink their entire franchise strategy.

It’s been reported that the Saints have a special price in mind, just for the Eagles. The Eagles own their 2023 first-round pick which they sent to Philadelphia in the 2022 draft, which the Saints flipped and repurposed in another trade to get Chris Olave. Apparently, the Saints would send Kamara to the Eagles if they could get that pick back.

Yeah, doesn’t exactly sound like a team that has a clear vision in mind to basically undo what they just did last offseason.

The Saints need to commit to a direction, and Alvin Kamara trade rumors prove it

Maybe I’m not giving Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis enough credit. Perhaps getting their first-round draft pick back would actually give the Saints some needed recalibration and give them the draft pick they need to fully move toward a rebuild. I haven’t seen anything indicating that to be the case just yet, though. But if anything, it’s an admission that the decision to try to straddle competition or a rebuild in the post-Drew Brees/Seasn Payton era was a mistake.

Head coach Dennis Allen has not proven he can stay off the hot seat, and the Saints don’t have a quarterback they can express much confidence in.

Trading Kamara to get a pick back would just be further evidence that the Saints have yet to commit fully to a long-standing direction.

They need to commit to a rebuild, especially if they can get some picks out of Sean Payton’s inevitable return to coaching in the near future. Only if they were to use a first-round pick as a means to finally position themselves in a firm rebuilding direction would this make any sense at all.

Unfortunately, the NFC South is a mirage that they aren’t far off from being able to compete. They need to avoid that temptation for the sake of long-term health of the franchise.

Next. Why the Saints need to tear it down to the studs. dark
