Listen to the heartbreaking radio call of Carolina Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro missing a potential game-winning extra point after D.J. Moore’s insane touchdown catch.

Here’s one of the saddest sentences of the NFL season: Carolina Panthers kicker Eddy Pineiro missed an extra point that would have given his team sole possession of first place in the NFC South.

It’s pretty hard to rank the sadness but it could very well go:

  1. The Panthers, at 3-5, would have owned sole possesion of first place
  2. Atlanta was an extra point away from blowing a lead at home with first place on the line
  3. Eddy Pineiro missed an extra point that would have won the game

There’s a lot of nuance here, like the Falcons still having 12 seconds to potentially win the game to D.J. Moore’s inexcplicable unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushing the extra point further out than it otherwise would have been to Pineiro missing again in overtime with a chance to win.

Thus is life for an NFL kicker, when you miss with the game on the line you wear the loss whether it’s totally fair or not.

Carolina Panthers play-by-play announcer Anish Shoff was on the call, and what living through the high of the Moore touchdown and low of the Pinerio miss felt like.

The Moore moment was objectively unbelievable and also a perfect metaphor for the gap between the NFC and AFC this year. Moore’s catch was spectacular but it was immedinedtly followed up by something very stupid that pretty much negated any excitement. Moore scored and took his helmet off, which was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct — a 15-yard penalty that the Falcons wisely chose to enforce on the extra point try.

Arthur Smith’s logic likely was that pushing the extra point back increased the liklihood that Pineiro missed the kick. That was a gamble that paid off:

Those two radio calls perfectly encaspulate the highs and lows of being a sports fan, and also paint a picture of how things are in the NFC. Outside of the Eagles, Cowboys, Giants, Seahawks, and Vikings, the rest of the NFC is a total crapshoot that is an impossible code to decipher.

Case in point being this sequence of events happened with first place and the right to host a Wild Card game on the line.
