1. Cardinals front office willing to spend

When a player like Contreras becomes an unrestricted free agent (UFA), teams will need to offer a hefty chunk of change to even be in the running for their services. It appears that the Cardinals have no problem with that, as their front office has made it known that they are willing to be big spenders this offseason. This is understandable, as they are coming off of a 93-69 season and are aiming to build off of what was a successful season. Furthermore, given the retirements of Molina and Albert Pujols, they will need to spend to replace them.

Truthfully, I believe that the Cardinals have no choice but to outbid other teams for Contreras. They need to replace Molina behind the plate immediately, and the veteran catcher is simultaneously showing real interest in being a Cardinal.

Therefore, once free agency begins this winter, GM Michael Girsch will need to complete this major splash and bring Contreras to St. Louis. If not, it will feel like a wasted opportunity.
