The Georgia Bulldogs made their case as to why they should’ve been the top-ranked team in the nation after they convincingly beat the Tennessee Volunteers.

The Georgia Bulldogs were scheduled to take on the Tennessee Volunteers in Week 10. It was already a huge matchup, but the stakes only increased upon the reveal of the very first College Football Playoff rankings. Tennessee ranked No. 1, while Georgia ranked No. 3.

On Saturday, Georgia showed the CFP selection committee that they made the wrong decision, as they convincingly defeated Tennessee 27-13. The high-powered offense of the Volunteers was stifled by the dominant defense of the Bulldogs.

After the game, Smart was hyped about the team’s big win over Tennessee, and was asked by CBS Sports’ Jenny Dell how Georgia was “able to send them packing their bags the way you just did.”

“A bunch of kids that love this place,” said Smart. “We took zero out of the portal, they all love it here, they competed their ass off and these fans are elite. I’m so proud for this university and these kids. They practiced their butt off for two weeks.”

Smart was then asked about how the team performed, citing the play of quarterback Stetson Bennett and the defense.”

“They play together. They stuck to the plan. When you stick to the plan, you got a hell of a chance,” said Smart. “Nowhere to run, nowhere to hide. That was our theme. We told them we wanted to play right here in our box.”

Georgia’s defense played a huge role in the win, limiting Tennessee’s offense to just 289 yards of total offense. In fact, they prevented the Volunteers from reaching the end zone for over 55 minutes.

During his postgame press conference, Smart gave credit to the fans at Sanford Stadium making it a great home environment. Smart’s come courtesy of Zach Klein of WSB-2 in Atlanta

“Even when it rained, Claude [Felton] made mention that at the start of the second half, there wasn’t an empty seat in the house other than the ones [Tennessee] purchased,” said Smart. “Our fans were elite today. We asked them to be. They responded, and they get the second-place vote, because the players on this team bought in…”

Smart also spoke about the performance of Bennett, whom he called a “winner” and a “competitor.” The quote comes from Jordan D. Hill of Dawgs247.

Bennett completed 17-of-25 pass attempts for 257 yards, two touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while also running for a 13-yard touchdown on his lone carry of the game.

With this victory, it would be hard to imagine Georgia not being ranked No. 1 in the next College Football Playoff rankings based on their convincing win over Tennessee. Then, they get to face off against Mississippi State next Saturday.
