3 Philadelphia Phillies who were huge disappointments in the World Series loss to Houston
By Kevin Henry
1. J.T. Realmuto
Sure, there were plenty of Phillies batters who struck out plenty of times in the World Series, but none did it more than Realmuto.
In 24 World Series at-bats, Realmuto whiffed in 12 of them, including three times in three consecutive games. When the batter who is hitting third in your lineup isn’t even able to put the ball in play, that’s hard for any team to overcome, let alone a Phillies team that was often struggling to find its rhythm against Houston pitchers.
Realmuto started the World Series hot at the plate, going 2-for-4 without a strikeout in a Game 1 win in Houston where he provided the go-ahead run in the 10th with a solo shot off Houston reliever Luis Garcia. However, after that, the veteran catcher was more of a liability than an asset at the plate for Philadelphia.
The Philadelphia catcher hit .276 in the regular season, so his drop-off to .215 in the postseason, including .167 in the World Series, was tough for the Phillies to overcome.
