The Alabama dynasty is not yet dead, but it is sick, dying and could be coming to an end soon.
For the first time since 2010, the Alabama Crimson Tide have essentially been eliminated from national championship discussions well before the Iron Bowl.
Alabama losing on the road to two-loss LSU in Death Valley pretty much eliminates any serious discussion about the Crimson Tide making the College Football Playoff this season. It would only be the second time for that to happen since the current postseason format’s creation in 2014. Interestingly enough, it would be the second time in four years that the Tide are not getting in.
For Nick Saban to keep the Alabama dynasty alive for just a bit longer, changes have to be made.
Alabama: 3 offseason changes to be made to keep the dynasty alive … for now
3. Fire offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien or let him leave for another decent job
While there is a chance offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien could lead the Ramblin’ Wreck long-term, he is running out of time in Tuscaloosa. Although Bryce Young is the only Alabama quarterback with a Heisman Trophy on his mantle, the Crimson Tide offense has become rather Houston Texans pedestrian under O’Brien. It may be time for him to find another football team to work for.
2. Fire defensive coordinator Pete Golding and replace him with another project
This was the true beginning of the end of the Alabama dynasty. While O’Brien has taken a lot of flak as offensive coordinator, he is nowhere near as guilty as long-time defensive coordinator Pete Golding. O’Brien may not be Lane Kiffin or Steve Sarkisian, but Golding sure as hell is not Kirby Smart or even Jeremy Pruitt. Saban needs to hire another coaching project to revamp this defense.
1. Focus a ton of energy on recruiting and developing the wide receiver room
While getting two new coordinators at this stage of Saban’s coaching career would be like shuffling chairs on the deck of the Titanic, the best course of action is to revitalize a plan on how to get better in the receiving corps stat. That had been Alabama’s bread and butter since Kiffin first arrived in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide have deviated from it a bit and need to chart a new course.
Overall, the entire Alabama football program has to accept what was once working no longer is.
