Is Texas A&M gearing up to fire Jimbo Fisher for Deion Sanders?

According to Charles Barkley, there’s going to be a “shocker firing in the SEC,” and that team will make a run at Deion Sanders.

The Texas A&M Aggies were expected to be one of the top teams in the SEC this season, as they had a top-tier recruiting class. This was the year they would make a run for the conference championship. Instead, they sit at 3-7 on the year, and Fisher’s seat has risen to the temperature of molten lava amongst the fan base. But would the program actually move on from him?

During an appearance on “The Next Round,” NBA analyst Charles Barkley expressed his belief that there would be a “shocker firing in the SEC,” and that team would go make a run at Jackson State head coach Deion Sanders.

When one of the hosts brought up Texas A&M, Barkley was silent for a few seconds before saying “I didn’t say a word.”

“I think there’s going to be a shocker firing in the SEC and I know for a fact that they’re probably gonna go after Deion [Sanders],” said Barkley. “I know that for a fact.”

It is no secret that teams are coveting Sanders, considering how much success Jackson State’s football team has had since he took over as head coach. The program won the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship last year, they brought in the top recruit in the 2022 class in defensive back Travis Hunter, and are currently 10-0 this season.

Despite how poorly the Aggies have played this season under Fisher, firing him would be costly for the university…literally. If they were to move on from Fisher after the season, Texas A&M would owe him $86 million, due to the fact that he signed a 10-year, $95 million fully-guaranteed contract extension prior to the 2021 campaign.

That would be a tough pill to swallow for the Aggies, but they have drastically underperformed, despite having one of the best recruiting classes in the country. Will the university opt that they’ve seen enough of Fisher one year into a 10-year deal? We could find out the answer depending on how they play in their final two games of the season against UMass and LSU.
