Winning a World Cup takes a lot of talent and determination. Winning it multiple times is even more impressive. But who has won it the most?
The World Cup is set to start this weekend, taking place in November and December for the first time ever. Additionally, it’s the first time Qatar has hosted the event.
With so many firsts, could we have a new team win the tournament, or will it be one of the familiar faces hoisting the trophy at the end?
Let’s take a look at the teams that have historically dominated the tournament.
Heading into Qatar, which country has won the most World Cups?
Brazil has won the World Cup the most times with five. Here are the total wins by nation in order of most to least:
- Brazil: 5
- Germany: 4
- Italy: 4
- Argentina: 2
- France: 2
- Uruguay: 2
- England: 1
- Spain: 1
Brazil last won in 2002, and Germany in 2014. The last time any of the nations outside of the four most winningest won the tournament was Spain, who took their first World Cup in 2010 over the Netherlands.
Which country has the most FIFA World Cup Finals appearances?
In terms of appearances, Brazil comes in second with seven. First is Germany, who has appeared in the World Cup finals a whopping eight times. Here is the entire list:
- Germany: 8
- Brazil: 7
- Italy: 6
- Argentina: 5
- France: 3
- Netherlands: 3
- Uruguay: 2
- Czechoslovakia: 2
- Hungary: 2
- England: 1
- Spain: 1
- Sweden: 1
- Croatia: 1
Croatia made its first appearance in 2018. Before that, we haven’t seen a fresh face in the final since Spain in 2010.
