NC State starts North Carolina’s rough day with upset win: Best memes and tweets
NC State beat the odds and sent North Carolina fans into a tailspin with an upset on the football field before the Tar Heels tumbled in basketball too.
It would have been bad enough for North Carolina Tar Heels fans to suffer an upset loss on the basketball court on Friday. They also had to watch in horror as their football team fell to rival NC State.
Within a span of 15 minutes, UNC football missed a field goal in overtime to lose to the Wolfpack in an upset then UNC basketball lost to unranked Iowa.
The basketball loss was a big blow to the Tar Heels. The football loss will hurt even more because of the rivalry and the what-ifs. North Carolina was 9-1 just a couple of weeks ago. They’ve suffered two consecutive losses.

This one was particularly sweet for NC State fans and players because of comments UNC quarterback Drake Maye made earlier this year.
“Whether you want to admit it or not, growing up in Carolina, you’re gonna be a Carolina fan,” Maye said. “Some people may say [NC] State, but really people who go to State just can’t get into Carolina.”
Maye apologized for the comments but you can bet Wolfpack fans referenced that quote plenty after the game.
Despite the loss, the Tar Heels still have something to play for this season. They have a place in the ACC title game where they will attempt to best Clemson for an ACC Championship. It would be their first conference title since 1980.
NC State will get to bask in this victory while awaiting their bowl matchup.
