The USMNT turned up the heat on England in the World Cup, outplaying the group favorites to a 0-0 draw that had fans buzzing.
Coming off a disappointing 1-1 draw against Wales, Team USA proved Friday that all draws are not created equally because the vibes after a 0-0 draw to England were totally different.
England went into the World Cup group stage matchup as solid favorites over the US Men’s National Team. They had smashed Iran 6-2 to begin their tournament.
The Americans stood their ground. They outplayed the Brits for most of the 90 minutes, keeping Harry Kane and company goalless. Their own lack of finishing was the only thing preventing an outright victory.
Here’s how Twitter users responded to the game:

I’m proud of USA - that was a spirited effort! Man do we need a striker.

I just watched USA vs England on FOX in its entirety. Not much happened - which was a great thing. 0-0. We battled toe-to-toe with the heavy favorites, held our own. Pulisic lefty-drilled one off the crossbar. Late English header was scary but wide. Now: beat Iran, advance.

2022 - ENG 0 - 0 USA 🤝
All in the group stage. 🤷 pic.twitter.com/M9FUxRYNrg
England have never won a game vs USA at a world cup, lots of "its coming home" shouts from a team that can't beat a country calling it soccer.

Imagine if England sent 53 dudes to the USA to challenge our American Football All-Pro’s and we tied with them. 😭

England’s big win over Iran and the point they gained against Team USA makes it likely they’ll advance to the knockout rounds. However, they will be disappointed at their performance against an opponent with far less firepower at their fingertips. They will go on to face Wales with a chance to get things right before the bigger matchups to come.
The Americans can be disappointed that they didn’t come away with a point after such a strong performance against one of the tournament favorites. However, they kept the ball in their court by forcing a draw. Now, they know a win over Iran will advance them through without having to depend on other results.
Outside of a lackluster second half against Wales, the USMNT has shown signs that the young generation of American soccer stars could have some big things ahead of them. The question is whether they have what it takes to truly make waves in this tournament.
