The Game is the rivalry game between Ohio State and Michigan. The two meet the Saturday after Thanksgiving, but who holds the lead in the rivalry?

As the Ohio State Buckeyes and Michigan Wolverines prepare for their annual rivalry matchup, let’s take a stroll through some of the history of The Game.

The Buckeyes have managed to dominate the series in recent history. Ohio State is currently on an eight-game winning streak over Michigan as the Wolverines’ last win in the rivalry came back in 2011.

Prior to that 40-34 Wolverines win, Ohio State had a seven-game winning streak over Michigan, as the Buckeyes won every meeting from 2004 through 2010. The Wolverines were able to get wins in 2000 and 2003, but the Buckeyes won the years sandwiched in there, 2001 and 2002. It was the Wolverines that picked up the win in 2021, however, with a dominant 42-27 victory.

This rivalry really hasn’t been much fun for Michigan fans through most of this millennium. All-in-all, Ohio State holds an advantage of 17-4 in this rivalry series dating all the way back to 2000.

But the Buckeyes don’t lead the overall series.

Ohio State vs. Michigan all-time record: Ohio State Buckeyes have dominated recent history against Michigan Wolverines

Historically, Michigan has managed to win more games in this series. Of the 116 times these teams have met, the Wolverines happen to lead the Buckeyes overall with 59 wins to Ohio State’s 51. Michigan and Ohio State have tied a total of six times.

So Michigan leads The Game rivalry 59-51-6 over Ohio State.

But when did many of those wins come for the Wolverines? Early on in the 1900s. Things shifted as time wore on and the Wolverines haven’t really done much as of late.

Michigan either won or played to a stalemate in each of the first 15 meetings with Ohio State from 1897 up to 1918. Both teams has had a turn at controlling this series, and the Buckeyes are clearly the ones on top at the moment.
