Auburn’s Hugh Freeze contract might include a bizarre social media clause

Auburn football’s contract agreement with Hugh Freeze, formerly of Liberty, reportedly includes a bizarre social media clause that restricts him from using his own accounts.

Hugh Freeze was hired as Auburn’s head coach on Monday to mixed reviews. The Tigers players enjoyed playing under Cadillac Williams, but the former NFL running back will stay on as an associate head coach under Freeze, which ought to smooth things over a bit.

The hiring of Freeze comes at a desperate time for the Auburn program, as they’ve fallen too far behind the likes of Alabama and Georgia in the SEC. It’s why they were willing to sell their soul to hire Freeze, a man who was previously punished by the NCAA and resigned in disgrace during his last Power 5 stint at Ole Miss. Freeze also infamously conducted an extramarital affair which was made public, and called an escort service while on a recruiting trip.

Freeze has since apologized for his actions publicly, and moved on. His second chance occurred at Liberty, where he turned the Flames into one of the better Group-of-5 programs in the country. Liberty is set to join Conference USA in the coming years.

While the complete details of Hugh Freeze’s contract haven’t been made available to the public yet, it’s sure to have some caveats to protect Auburn from the unpredictable. Freeze’s last stint in the SEC did end in complete chaos, so it’s fair game on The Plains.

Per Sports Illustrated, Freeze has agreed to relinquish control of his social media accounts.

Freeze had been quite active on Twitter, even reaching out to members of the media via direct message. Those days are over — or at least put on pause — for now, especially as the Tigers try to limit the PR damage after hiring one of the more controversial figures in the sport.
