Texas Longhorns quarterback Hudson Card will enter the transfer portal for 2023, but which landing spots would make sense for the former 4-star QB?

Transfer portal season is about to have its heyday in college football and, though players can’t officially enter for another few days, we’re already starting to hear some names that plan on moving on from their current schools. Perhaps the biggest name yet is Texas Longhorns quarterback Hudson Card, who Pete Thamel of ESPN reported plans to transfer out of Austin.

Card is currently eyeing a Power 5 school for his next stop in college football — sorry, SMU — according to Thamel. The former 4-star and Top 100 recruit for the 2020 class figures to be a hot commodity in the portal as he showed significant improvement when asked to step up following Quinn Ewers’ injury this season. His decision also makes a great deal of sense with Ewers returning along with the arrival of wunderkind Arch Manning next season.

This season, the 6-foot-2 Lake Travis product played significantly in five games for the Longhorns and completed 69.4 percent of his passes for 928 yards, six touchdowns and just one interception.

But which schools need to be in on Hudson Card immediately? There are three Power 5 programs that jump to the top of mind for the soon-to-be former Texas quarterback.

3. Bret Bielema could elevate Illinois further by landing Hudson Card

The immediate success of Bret Bielema has enjoyed at Illinois has been undeniably impressive. He’s 13-11 over his first two seasons with the Fighting Illini and has a 9-9 record in the Big Ten, even competing until the final day of the regular season to win the West division this season.

Amid that success in 2022, Bielema had turned to Syracuse transfer Tommy DeVito at quarterback. But with the veteran now on his way out, he’ll need a new option to keep the wins coming in Champaign. Card could very well be that guy and, perhaps, even be an upgrade from DeVito should the Texas transfer continue to develop.

There’s no question that Illinois will continue to rely heavily on its defense and rushing attack but adding a more dangerous passing element with Card could raise the ceiling for the Illini overall while also giving Card leeway in terms of his room to develop. This could be a win-win for player and program should Bielema be able to lure the Texas native to the midwest.
