The latest information shows that Dansby Swanson is an even more viable shortstop target for the Chicago Cubs.

The Chicago Cubs have been one of the more active teams at the MLB Winter Meetings this week. They were able to secure the services of former Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder and 2019 NL MVP Cody Bellinger on a one-year deal, and agreed to terms with former New York Yankees starting pitcher Jameson Taillon to a four-year, $68 million contract. Their most pressing need is at shortstop, and they have been linked to every top free agent at that position.

When it comes to the remaining shortstops available, Dansby Swanson is the most viable for the Cubs.

John Lund of “Papa and Lund” on KNBR in San Francisco tweeted out about his conversation about the latest news regarding the shortstops with ESPN’s Jesse Rogers. In that discussion, the “latest lean” was Swanson to the Cubs, where Rogers said that his deal would be half the cost of what Carlos Correa could sign for.

Dansby Swanson viable for Cubs due to cost

The Cubs have been linked to Swanson, as they have with each of the top four players available. Trea Turner is no longer an option, as he agreed to terms on an 11-year, $300 million contract with the Philadelphia Phillies.

On Wednesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic wrote in his latest article that the Cubs see Swanson as “their most realistic target at shortstop,” if they don’t enter a heavy pursuit of Correa.

Swanson is coming off of an incredible 2022 season with the Atlanta Braves, as he was selected to his first All-Star Game and won his very first Gold Glove award. Playing in all 162 regular-season games, Swanson recorded a .277 batting average, a .329 on-base percentage, a .447 slugging percentage, 25 home runs, 96 RBI, 99 runs scored, and 177 hits.

It may only be a matter of time until Swanson, Correa, and Xander Bogaerts all agree to terms on new contracts. For the Cubs, the feeling is that Swanson could be their shortstop for the foreseeable future, barring any changes.
