Why isn’t College GameDay at the 2022 Army-Navy game?

College GameDay had been at the annual Army-Navy game every year since 2014 but won’t be in Philadelphia in 2022. Why is that happening?

Given its standalone Saturday every season, there is nothing quite like the annual Army-Navy game. When the Black Knights and Midshipmen face off it’s always a phenomenal scene as students and servicemembers alike gather at a big neutral site for a tradition-filled and triple-option-centric game that everyone tunes in for and respects.

One of the things that has made the scene ultra special in recent years is ESPN sending the College GameDay crew to wherever the game is being played, even though the network doesn’t carry the broadcast. They’ve done so every year since 2014 and seeing all of the students, fans and families in attendance (and braving the cold) creates an electric atmosphere.

But unfortunately, that won’t be the case for the 2022 Army-Navy game. There are no listings or plans for the GameDay crew to be in Philadelphia for the game on Saturday, Dec. 10. The big question you have to ask is why.

There has not been an exact reason given for why College GameDay isn’t going to be outside Lincoln Financial Field or anywhere in Philadelphia for Saturday’s game. Having said that, the ESPN Saturday morning staple is undergoing some changes.

Chris Fallica (a.k.a. The Bear) is leaving ESPN after this season for another platform. Meanwhile, the legendary Lee Corso has been experiencing health issues all season and has missed multiple shows throughout the year. So it’s quite possible that both of these factors played into GameDay not going to the Army-Navy game in cold Philadelphia conditions. We can only hope the decision doesn’t stem from the fact that the two teams have experienced down years.

Even still, it’s a shame that it won’t happen for the 2022 playing of this historic rivalry, but hopefully it’s something that won’t become a trend and we’ll see GameDay back to give the Black Knights and Midshipmen in action at the end of the 2023 season.
