Who was the last Heisman Trophy winner from Georgia? The Bulldogs have waited a long time for a player to become their third winner.

As a Heisman finalist in 2022, Stetson Bennett IV has already come closer to winning the Heisman than anyone at Georgia in years.

The Bulldogs have been exceptionally successful this century, with 14 10-win seasons since 2000. But they haven’t put players in New York to contend for the Heisman Trophy.

Bennett IV is the first Heisman finalist for Georgia since 1992. When was the last time the Bulldogs had a winner?

Hershel Walker was the last Heisman Trophy winner from Georgia

Hershel Walker won the Heisman Trophy in 1982 after finishing in second place in 1981 and third place in 1980. The outstanding running back personified Heisman-level play, going down as one of the most impressive rushers in the history of football.

Since Walker, the Bulldogs have had just one player invited to New York. Running back Garrison Hearst finished third in the voting in 1992 behind winner Gino Torretta of Miami and San Diego State running back Marshall Faulk.

Along with Walker, Hearst and now Bennett, Georgia has produced two other finalists. Running back Charley Trippi was the runner-up to Army’s Glen Davis in 1946. In 1942, running back Frank Sinkwich won the Bulldogs’ first Heisman Trophy over Columbia QB Paul Governalia and Georgia Tech RB Clint Castleberry.

Even without a Heisman Trophy in hand, Bennett has put himself in elite company when it comes to Bulldog stars. The rise from walk-on to Heisman finalist has been impressive.
