Former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski wasn’t sold on the Dallas Cowboys heading into their Week 14 game against the Houston Texans.

The Dallas Cowboys continue to attempt to gain ground on the Philadelphia Eagles for the NFC East crown. But in Week 14, they had difficulty beating the one-win Houston Texans. Luckily for them, they were able to capitalize on Houston’s ineffective red zone offense late in the game, and take a late 27-23 lead on a touchdown run by Ezekiel Elliott, which was enough to get the win.

With this performance against a now 1-11-1 Texans team, that’s going to be a hard sell for the Cowboys as legitimate Super Bowl contenders.

Former NFL tight end Rob Gronkowski is not buying what the Cowboys are selling. During his appearance on FOX NFL Sunday, Gronkowski said the Cowboys are pretenders because “history states that they’re pretenders every single year.”

Important to note that these comments came prior to the Cowboys-Texans game.

Dallas should have cruised to an easy win over Houston. Instead, they had to overcome their mistakes and take a late lead with just seconds remaining in regulation.

The Cowboys woes began after they were receiving the punt from the Texans, but wide receiver KaVontae Turpin fumbled. Houston regained possession and tied the game up on a one-yard touchdown run by Dameon Pierce.

Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott picked the wrong week to have turnover woes. He threw an interception near the end of the second quarter, and Houston capitalized with a 28-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jeff Driskell to wide receiver Amari Rodgers to take a 17-14 lead. Then, Prescott threw a costly interception deep in Dallas’ own territory late in the fourth quarter, giving Houston the chance to ice the game.

Luckily for Prescott, the Texans completely fell over themselves in the red zone, turning the football over on downs. That allowed Dallas to orchestrate a game-winning touchdown drive.

When all is said and done, the Cowboys can say that they’re 10-3 on the season and still remain two games behind the Philadelphia Eagles for first place in the NFC East. But it may take some further convincing from the team for fans and media alike to buy into what they’re selling.

Even before the narrow victory over a team that’s in the driver’s seat for the No. 1 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Gronkowski was not a believer in the Cowboys.
