Texas Longhorns men’s basketball coach Chris Beard has been arrested for domestic violence.

The University of Texas’ men’s basketball coach Chris Beard was arrested on Monday morning for domestic violence.

Beard is being charged with felony assault on a family member. He is currently going through the booking process with Travis County. Beard was arrested in Austin in the very early hours of Monday morning. His felony assault charge is of the third-degree variety which is being described as “impeding breath circulation or strangulation” with a member of his family. This is so horrible…

The University of Texas is well aware of the incident involving the men’s basketball head coach.

"“The University is aware of the situation regarding Chris Beard,” said the university in a statement. “We are continuing to gather information and monitoring the legal process.”"

No. 2 Texas is 7-1 on the year and is hosting the Rice Owls at the Moody Center on Monday night.

Update (Dec. 12, 12:46 p.m. ET) – Beard’s attorney Perry Minton released a statement on his client as Beard remains in jail and having not yet seen a judge for his bail to be set.

“Coach Beard is 100 percent innocent of these charges,” Hinton said. “He should have never been arrested. The complainant wants him released immediately and all charges dismissed. It is truly inconceivable.”

The charges levied against Beard hold a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.

Texas basketball head coach Chris Beard arrested for domestic violence incident

This is Beard’s second season back at his alma mater. He first rose to national prominence as the former head coach of the Texas Tech Red Raiders, a program he helped guide to the national championship only a few years ago. The Texas gig was described by Beard himself as his “dream job” when he took over the Longhorns program in 2021. Sadly, this might be coming to an end here…

While more news will come out from this incident, this is heartbreaking for the Longhorn community. Beard is one of them and had the men’s basketball team back to good and approaching its zenith. He was well on his way towards achieving all that he did in Lubbock and then some in Austin. Unfortunately, the chances of him retaining his job do not seem promising.
