Russell Wilson became a meme once again for looking downtrodden in Las Vegas, an allegory for the massive gamble his Denver Broncos experiment has been.

Russell Wilson can’t seem to catch a break in 2022.

First, there’s the bitterness from Seattle fans for Wilson’s unexpected departure, a betrayal that still draws ire from Seahawks fans.

Then there’s the fact that his plan to emulate Tom Brady and Matthew Stafford backfired to a comical degree, but the dumpster fire that is the 3-10 Broncos is so far gone that the comedy has grown increasingly dark.

Now, the Broncos face the Arizona Cardinals without Wilson, even though Wilson has been cleared from concussion protocol. There’s also reports that Wilson’s personal quarterback coach has caused organizational issues for the Broncos lately. It seems Wilson opted to distract himself from all this by hitting the tables in Las Vegas, but his downtrodden expression has Wilson critics reveling in his apparent misery.

At this point, anything Wilson does draws criticism, to the point that there’s a lot of inference on a photo of a person who could just be lost in thought.

But the context of Wilson’s scenario in Denver, including the fact that he touted himself as the solution for Broncos woes, makes him open to incessant critiques.

Wilson hasn’t delivered, “Let’s Ride” has been one crash after another, and Wilson is now getting over a concussion injury. It’s been one disaster after another, and understandably, missing out on an opportunity to play could very well sting. Wilson built an impressive reputation as one of the league’s best passers, one who took the Seahawks to the playoffs nearly every year for a decade. Everything he built in Seattle lies in shambles until Wilson can return to form, and on a new team that still has coaching issues of its own, the Russell Wilson experiment could take time to develop — if it does develop after this.

Even Wilson’s inspirational tweets seem to have taken a toll from this season, with Wilson wistfully promising “better days ahead” for Broncos fans.

Hopefully, there’s better days ahead for Wilson, too.
