Pittsburgh Steelers backup linebacker Marcus Allen committed the most dumbfounding penalty of 2022, which led to points scored by the Carolina Panthers.

When it comes to the NFL, there are bound to be some penalties that can be debated. Just look at the calls in the epic Minnesota Vikings-Indianapolis Colts game on Saturday. But then there are penalties in which fans will question what that player was thinking.

That was the case in the Week 15 game between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Carolina Panthers, courtesy of linebacker Marcus Allen.

The Steelers defense was in great shape, as the Panther offense faced a fourth-and-27 situation in the third quarter. The problem is, Allen decided it would be a great idea to walk into the Panthers’ huddle along the sidelines. That resulted in him getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, which moved the Panthers 15-yard forward and gave them an automatic first down.

Again, this penalty wiped out a fourth-and-27 for Carolina and gave them a fresh set of downs. Why do something like this?

To make matters worse for the Steelers, the Panthers were able to get points at the end of the drive, courtesy of a 29-yard field goal by Eddy Pineiro. That cut Carolina’s deficit to 21-10.

One drive later for the Panthers, they were able to cut the Steelers’ lead to 21-13 on a 32-yard field goal by Pineiro on the next drive.

Luckily for Pittsburgh, Allen’s penalty wasn’t that costly. The Steelers were able to close out the game on their final offensive drive of the game, where Chris Boswell kicked a 50-yard field goal to give them a 24-13 lead. That drive featured 13 plays and took off over five minutes of playing time.

The Steelers won 24-16.

Regardless of how the game ended, criticism will be heading Allen’s way for his choice to walk into Carolina’s huddle during a timeout.
