Biggest upset in College Football Playoff history
By Scott Rogust
The TCU Horned Frogs could secure the biggest upset in College Football Playoff history. Here is the largest upset victory entering New Year’s Eve.
Every year, the College Football Playoff committee selects their four-best teams in the nation to participate in the four-team tournament. The last team remaining will be the national champions of college football.
This year, the four teams participating in the Playoff are the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs, No. 2 Michigan Wolverines, No. 3 TCU Horned Frogs, and the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes.
When it comes to the Fiesta Bowl, TCU is considered to be the biggest underdog in College Football Playoff history. According to Caesar’s Sportsbook (via CBS Sports), the Horned Frogs were 8-point underdogs against the Wolverines in the Fiesta Bowl.
So, who holds the distinction of holding the biggest upset win prior to the 2022 College Football Playoff?
What is the biggest upset in College Football Playoff history?
On Dec. 31 in the 2022 Fiesta Bowl between TCU and Michigan, the Horned Frogs closed as 8-point underdogs. They pulled off the win, though, after jumping out to a big lead and holding on in order to upset the Wolverines.
Previously, the biggest upset just so happened to occur in the very first edition of the Playoff. In the 2015 Sugar Bowl, the No. 4 Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the No. 1 Alabama Crimson Tide 42-35. Ohio State was considered 7-point underdogs in that matchup.
Ohio State was led by a superb performance by running back and current Dallas Cowboy Ezekiel Elliott. In the game, Elliott ran for 230 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries. He was named Sugar Bowl Offensive MVP as a result of these numbers.
Linebacker Darron Lee received Defensive MVP honors after recording seven solo tackles, three tackles for loss, and two sacks.
When it comes to the biggest upset win in the Playoff’s history, that honor belonged to Ohio State.
