Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback CJ Stroud opened up about threats he received after the team lost to Michigan in November.

College football fans are a serious bunch, especially in Columbus. But after Ohio State lost to Michigan in November, some Big Ten faithful went too far.

There’s no place for baseless threats in sports, let alone college football. These kids technically aren’t professionals yet. It’s just a game.

In the aftermath of Ohio State’s loss to Michigan — in which Stroud threw two touchdowns — some fans allegedly sent death threats to the future first-round pick. This is all per Stroud’s mom, who admitted the fact to Sports Illustrated this week.

“I don’t really look, but people have the audacity to call and talk to me and tell me what people say,” Stroud said Thursday. “It’s the nature of the beast. You accept the good with the bad. I thank God for a second chance at this game. We deserve to be here regardless of what happened that day.”

The actions of a few rogue fans obviously don’t reflect all Ohio State or Michigan supporters, by any means. Still, it speaks to just how seriously some take this rivalry. It can be unhealthy at times.

Stroud knows what he signed up for when he took over in Columbus. He’s arguably the top quarterback prospect in the country. These moments — however bleak they seem in the moment — will better prepare him for the ridicule he’ll receive at the next level.

Stroud and the Buckeyes face a tough test on Saturday against the No. 1 Georgia Bulldogs. UGA is favored, though some expect the high-powered OSU offense to provide the Dawgs with a unique test. It’s strength vs strength at the CFP.
