Iowa LB Jack Campbell’s grandfather killed in pedestrian accident before Music City Bowl

Iowa All-American Jack Campbell played in the Music City Bowl without knowng his grandfather tragically died in a pedestrian accident the night before.

Jack Campbell led the Iowa defense in a dominant showing against Kentucky in the Music City Bowl on Saturday. He led all players with 10 tackles, notching two tackles for loss including a sack.

It was an outstanding performance in what was likely his final game with the Hawkeyes before moving onto the NFL. Sadly, his grandfather didn’t get to see it.

William Smith Jr., Campbell’s 76-year-old grandfather, was killed in a pedestrian accident on Friday night in Nashville when he was struck by a hotel shuttle van, according to the Tennessean. Apparently, he did not hear a warning from a family member before stepping into the street. No charges are expected to be filed in what looks like a truly accidental death.

“Our hearts are with Jack and his entire family as they grieve the tragic death of their grandfather and father, William Smith, Jr.,” Iowa head coach Kirk Ferentz said in a statement. “We know Mr. Smith was a strong influence on his grandson and a faithful Hawkeye football supporter. All of us – players, coaches and staff members – will keep the Campbell family in our thoughts and prayers during this profoundly difficult time.”

According to Iowa’s release, Campbell’s parents decided not to inform him of the death before the bowl game on Saturday. He played without knowing the tragedy that had befallen his family.

It’s an unimaginable situation. There would be no good time to let Campbell know that his grandfather had died during the bowl trip.
