Jim Harbaugh is looking to bring the Michigan Wolverines football program their 12th-claimed national championship. But his bowl record with the school is far from great.

After a four-season stint with the San Francisco 49ers, Jim Harbaugh made the jump back to the college football coaching ranks. In late 2014, he was hired to be the head coach of his alma mater, the Michigan Wolverines. Since arriving, the expectations were high, hoping he could bring the program their 12th-claimed national title, and their first since 1997.

In 2022, Harbaugh has the team just two wins away from making that a reality. After going 13-0, Michigan clinched the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff. All they have to do is defeat the TCU Horned Frogs and the winner of the Georgia Bulldogs-Ohio State Buckeyes matchup in the Peach Bowl to be crowned national champions.

What is Jim Harbaugh’s bowl record as Michigan’s head coach?

As the head coach of the Wolverines, Harbaugh has a 1-5 record in bowl games entering the Fiesta Bowl. Let’s take a look at all six of Harbaugh’s bowl game appearances with the program:

• 2015: 41-9 win over Florida Gators in Citrus Bowl
• 2016: 33-32 loss to Florida State Seminoles in Orange Bowl
• 2017: 26-19 loss to South Carolina Gamecocks in Outback Bowl
• 2018: 41-15 loss to Florida Gators in Peach Bowl
• 2019: 35-16 loss to Alabama Crimson Tide in Citrus Bowl
• 2021: 34-11 loss to Georgia Bulldogs in Orange Bowl (College Football Playoff Semifinal)

Harbaugh’s lone bowl game win arrived in his first season, where they beat Florida in the Citrus Bowl, ending their season with a 10-3 record. Since then, Harbaugh is on a five-bowl game losing streak.

In 2021, Harbaugh succeeded in bringing the Wolverines close to a national championship. After beating Ohio State 42-27 in their regular-season finale and Iowa 42-3 in the Big Ten Championship Game, Michigan made it into the College Football Playoff for the first time ever. Sadly for them, they were decisively defeated by Georgia, the eventual national champions, in the Orange Bowl.

For those wondering, Harbaugh’s bowl game record as of this writing is…not great.
