A fan angle of the now-infamous Ohio State missed field goal in the Fiesta Bowl is even more heartbreaking for Buckeyes fans.

It has not been a great start to 2023 for Ohio State Buckeyes fans.

Had the count been stopped before the stroke of midnight, the Buckeyes are in the National Championship Game against TCU and on their way to an improbably title run. But as the clock struck 12 o’clock and the calendar rolled over to a New Year, the world imploded around Ohio State.

It’s the missed kick heard around the world, and a play that will be etched into the history and lore of college football forever. Not only because of the ramifications of what the missed game-winning field goal were, but because of the context in which it happened.

Quite literally, as the ball was dropping on New Year’s Eve on the east coast, the Buckeyes missed a shot at the title.

To be fair, the Buckeyes had already put themselves in a bind after blowing a 14-point fourth quarter lead and allowing Georgia to march down the field for a go-ahead drive with under a minute left. So it’s a bit of a fairy tale that the Buckeyes were winners before the clock struck midnight. But the fact remains that Ohio State managed to lose the same College Football Playoff semifinal game in two different years.

The view on television was rough enough for Buckeyes fans, but the fan view from an Ohio State section inside of Mercedes-Benz Stadium is even more heartbreaking.

Bettors are collateral damage in this situation, but we need to light candles for them as well. Ohio State came into the Fiesta Bowl as underdogs but nearly pulled out an incredible moneyline miracle to end the year strong and get every gamblers new year off to a great start.

Still, the pain is most searing for Buckeyes fans. Not only did they watch their school lose an instant classic, but that missed kick will be talked about forever as one of the most iconic moments in college football history.

Truly a bad beat for all.
