Ohio State’s missed field goal vs. Georgia timed up perfectly with the New York City ball-drop.

Timing is everything, as illustrated by Ohio State kicker Noah Ruggles’ missed game-winning field goal attempt vs. Georgia in the Chick-fil-A Peach Bowl.

As the calendar flipped to 2023, the clock officially struck midnight on the Buckeyes’ season. The No. 4 seed in the College Football Playoff gave the No. 1-seeded defending national champions all they could handle in their national semifinal game. Ohio State may have outplayed Georgia throughout the Peach Bowl, but 2022 was truly the Year of the Dawg. Georgia improved to 15-0.

Clock struck midnight on 2022 and Ohio State’s season on missed FG try vs. UGA.

No, this was not just synced up on a laptop somewhere. This truly miraculous college football moment happened in real time. Georgia only led Ohio State for a few minutes in the ballgame. Though the Dawgs out-executed the Buckeyes in the final third of the game, Ohio State played more than well enough to win. Buckeyes quarterback C.J. Stroud played the game of his life here.

Look. No one should bury Ruggles for his poorly-timed shank. It was a 50-yard field to potentially upset the best team in college football in the last two seasons. To almost pull this off in Georgia’s backyard in Atlanta would have been David truly slaying Goliath. However, close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, as the Dawgs had their day and will be heading to Los Angeles.

Meeting them at SoFi Stadium will be the plucky TCU Horned Frogs in a game that nobody expects Sonny Dykes’ team to actually win. It would be like Joe Namath’s New York Jets beating the Baltimore Colts in Super Bowl III. Ohio State earned a ton of respect for its valiant effort vs. Georgia, but the Buckeyes are too strong of a program to believe in the power of moral victories.

Although the Buckeyes will grow from this defeat, the Dawgs are poised to pull off the rare repeat.
