Mets need to take Twins renewed interest in Carlos Correa seriously
By Mark Powell
The New York Mets could be at risk of losing Carlos Correa to the Minnesota Twins, if they’re not careful.
Mets owner Steve Cohen seems relatively confident that New York will eventually sign shortstop Carlos Correa, but some around baseball aren’t so sure.
While Cohen is used to getting what he wants — mainly because he has enough money to feel that way, especially in baseball terms — Correa and Scott Boras have gotten tired of waiting. First, the San Francisco Giants wouldn’t give Correa the long-term contract the two sides had previously agreed upon due to issues with his physical. Now, Correa is dealing with the same issue in The Big Apple.
The team Correa played with last season, the Minnesota Twins, have reportedly reengaged with some interest in the star shortstop on a similar short-term deal.
Why haven’t the Mets signed Carlos Correa yet?
New York had issues with Carlos Correa’s physical, mainly regarding a leg injury he suffered back in the minor leagues. The injury resulted in surgery, and Correa had a plate installed near his ankle, which showed up on his physical. While Correa has been able to play on that ankle for quite some time now without missing significant playing time, both the Giants and New York were concerned with his longevity, especially prior to giving him a long-term commitment.
Could Carlos Correa spurn the Mets for the Twins?
Carlos Correa would prefer a long-term contract, and one with New York if they’re willing to pay him, but at this point it’s been over a week with no resolution. Scott Boras has received some interest from other teams, but they likely only want to sign Correa to a short-term deal, which is a similar predicament to the one he faced last offseason.
Correa wants his long-term contract, and if the Mets are willing to give it to him, he will sign on the dotted line. If not, then perhaps the Twins have a chance.
