Fans always want the natty to be a great game. That’s not always the case as the most points in a National Championship Game and biggest blowout show.

Whenever college football’s National Championship Game rolls around, fans always want to see a great matchup. And after the way the two semifinal matchups in the 2022-23 College Football Playoff delivered absolute thrillers, the hope was that we’d see another fantastic game between Georgia and TCU.

That was not the case.

Georgia jumped all over a TCU defense that wasn’t ready and caused the Horned Frogs offense all kinds of problems. With a pick and then a late touchdown in the first half, the Dawgs went up 38-7 in an absolute drubbing right out of the gate.

And that had college football fans wondering about the highest-scoring National Championship Game performances in history, the biggest blowouts and if TCU could stage a historic comeback.

Highest-scoring National Championship Game ever

Georgia notched the highest-scoring game individually ever against TCU as they put up 65 points in the rout.

The most points ever scored in the BCS era and the College Football Playoff era in the National Championship Game before Monday night was by USC Trojans in 2005 when they put up 55 points on Oklahoma. The most combined points was between Alabama and Clemson in the 2016 natty when they combined for 85 points in the 45-40 win for the Crimson Tide.

Biggest comeback in NCAA Football history

In terms of the largest comebacks in NCAA football history, the biggest where the trailing team actually came back to win was Michigan State storming back to beat Northwestern on Oct. 21, 2006 when the Spartans were down by a miraculous 35 points (38-3) in the second half but scored 38 unanswered points to win the game 41-38.

Biggest blowout in the National Championship Game

Georgia helped notch the biggest blowout in the BCS or CFP National Championship Game history with their 65-7 win, a 58-point margin of victory. There had been two 28-point wins in the Playoff era and a 36-point win for USC in the aforementioned game against Oklahoma in the 2004-05 season. It also is the biggest ever in a game to decide the national champion as the 38-point Nebraska win over Florida in 1995 held that mark previously.

In the College Football Playoff National Championship Game, we’ve seen a lot of good games but there have been a few blowouts. The biggest of the bunch prior to the Georgia-TCU meeting came in the end of the trilogy between Alabama and Clemson in 2018 as the Tigers, behind Trevor Lawrence, steamrolled the Crimson Tide in a 44-16 victory to give Dabo Swinney another natty. Alabama was on the other side of one that tied it in 2020 though as they beat Ohio State 52-24.
