New York Mets players were excited to play with Carlos Correa, but now he’s gone. Several of them admitted to disappointment about the move.

Carlos Correa signed with the Mets just over 20 days ago, marking the end of a ridiculous spending spree by owner Steve Cohen.

Cohen, the richest owner in all of baseball, considered Correa the cherry on top of his free-agent sundae. The luxury tax never applied to the Mets owner, who seemed honored the league altered its spending rules just to take him into account.

Yet, that doesn’t mean Cohen was willing to take on such an investment without insurance. Correa had already struggled to pass one physical with the San Francisco Giants, and the Mets did their due diligence. Unfortunately, they ran into the same issue.

Mets players disappointed by Carlos Correa news

“Everyone is disappointed,” one Met said, per Jon Heyman of the New York Post. “If the possibility wasn’t there nobody would have complained. However, the possibility was there to get much better, and it didn’t happen.”

Another Mets player admitted he was let down by the Correa news, while Cohen refused to comment on the latest Twins move.

Correa would have put New York over the top. While they remain among the National League’s elite, it’s tough not to view this as a step back, at least in the short term.

Mets will spend Carlos Correa’s money wisely

Missing on Correa is a disappointment, but it’s important to keep things in perspective. Next offseason, Max Scherzer’s contract could come off the book. The likes of Manny Machado, Shohei Ohtani and Julio Urias could all be free agents.

Cohen will make a run at any of the three if they are interested. Machado, for one, would fill in nicely at third base — the same position Correa was slated to play had he passed his physical.
