The New York Mets released a statement after Carlos Correa agreed to a contract with the Minnesota Twins. It was short and sweet.

For nearly 20 days, Carlos Correa was a New York Met, or so it appeared.

Steve Cohen considered Correa the cherry on top of his free-agency sundae. After a deal fell through with the San Francisco Giants, Cohen took a phone call from Cabo to work out the kinks of a contract with Correa’s agent, Scott Boras.

At the time, Cohen commented on the Correa move, making it obvious just how excited and crass he was to further the distance between his payroll and the luxury tax threshold. Cohen’s team is still expensive, but it’s lacking one Carlos Correa.

Correa signed with the Twins on Wednesday, passing his physical, which is something he failed to do with both the Mets and Giants due to a plate in his right leg dating back to his minor-league days.

Mets release statement on Carlos Correa signing

Despite their initial excitement, Correa and New York could not come to an agreement on a revised deal of any kind. In fact, Correa’s camp reportedly wouldn’t even consider it, hence his eventual decision to sign a six-year, $200 million contract with the Minnesota Twins. Given the vesting options, the contract could be as long as 10 years if Correa stays healthy and productive.

New York’s statement on the matter was short and sweet.

Fans across baseball surely have questions as to how this situation played out, and why two organizations were so concerned about a surgery which took place in 2014. Injuries are a part of sports, and if pitchers can receive record deals after Tommy John surgery, surely a player like Correa can overcome an issue from eight years ago to sign his own agreement, no?

The Mets weren’t comfortable enough to pull the trigger.
