The Georgia Bulldogs could potentially lose one of their top coaches on Kirby Smart’s staff this offseason, and it’s not for another college job.

The Georgia Bulldogs are once again College Football Playoff national champions after the team blew out the TCU Horned Frogs 65-7 in the title game. Much like the year prior, there will be roster turnover, with many of their top players declaring for the NFL Draft. But could there also be a change on the coaching staff?

Offensive coordinator Todd Monken could potentially be on the move, and it wouldn’t be for a college job.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich on Thursday after the offense underperformed and the team went 8-9 on the year. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo, Monken is a name to watch as head coach Todd Bowles’ next offensive coordinator.

Todd Monken reportedly linked to Buccaneers OC vacancy

This wouldn’t be the first time that Monken joined the Buccaneers. Back in 2016, Monken was hired to be the team’s offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach under head coach Dirk Koetter. His stint lasted three seasons until Koetter’s firing, and he wasn’t retained by Bruce Arians.

In 2019, Monken was hired to be the offensive coordinator for the Cleveland Browns. His stint lasted until head coach Freddie Kitchens’ firing after the 2019 campaign.

Let’s take a look at the average total yards of offense and points scored per game in Monken’s four years as an NFL offensive coordinator (via ESPN):

  • 2016: 346.4 total yards of offense (18th in NFL), 22.1 points (19th)
  • 2017: 363.5 total yards of offense (ninth), 20.9 points (18th)
  • 2018: 415.5 total yards of offense (third), 24.9 points (12th)
  • 2019: 340.9 total yards of offense (22nd), 20.9 points (22nd)

Monken made the jump back to college in 2020, joining the Bulldogs football program as their new offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Let’s just say it has been a successful tenure. After all, the team did win two national titles in Monken’s three seasons.

This past season, Georgia’s offense averaged 501.1 yards of offense (fifth) and 41.1 points (tied-fourth) per game, via NCAA.com.

Facing TCU in the CFP National Championship Game, the Bulldogs’ offense put up 589 total yards (335 yards passing, 254 yards rushing) on 72 plays.

It’s unknown if Monken will make the jump back to the NFL, but the Buccaneers’ offensive coordinator vacancy could be one to keep an eye on. That is certainly an interesting coaching vacancy, as the team could very well have a change at the quarterback position with Tom Brady hitting free agency.
