The Buffalo Bills feel like the embodiment of cold-weather football and it feels like we see that time, time and time again when it comes to the NFL Playoffs. With the success Buffalo has enjoyed since the emergence of Josh Allen as a bonafide superstar, we've seen a lot of home games being played at Highmark Stadium in January. Spoiler alert, it gets pretty darn cold and pretty darn snowy in that part of New York in that time of year.

In the Wild Card Round of the 2025 playoffs with the Bills hosting the Broncos, the conditions were indeed quite cold but there wasn't snow in the forecast. Buffalo advanced with ease, of course, scoring 31 unanswered points after falling behind 7-0 early for a 24-point victory that pushed them into the Divisional Round. But now, a tougher test awaits before they can earn another AFC Championship Game date with the rival Chiefs.

Next up for Buffalo is the Baltimore Ravens. Since the Bills are the No. 2 seed, Allen and his cohorts will play host to fellow MVP candidate, Lamar Jackson, in one of the most anticipated clashes in recent Divisional Round history. And we might get the only thing that could make that even better: True football weather.

There is a Lake Effect Snow Warning in Buffalo on Sunday for the game and the precipitation has been falling for days. With a high of only 22 degrees, you can expect Bills-Ravens to be played in some true Buffalo weather that we've grown accustomed to seeing this time of year. But how will Highmark Stadium deal with the cold and snow? That has fans wondering about what Highmark Stadium has to help combat these conditions they see so frequently.

More specifically, the question was if the Bills field is heated or not.

Is the Buffalo Bills field heated?

The quick answer to that is no. Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium does not have a heating system beneath their turf. They go out and brave the true elements in the outdoors whenever they play in this type of game.

What’s interesting is that we often hear about the Frozen Tundra for Green Bay and Lambeau Field, but that stadium and field have a heating system installed beneath the field. That means that Buffalo has earned that title more so given that the Bills field is not heated.

Regardless, it makes for some great scenes in Buffalo whenever the snow is falling. It’s really just 22 guys battling it out in whatever the weather has to offer. Football doesn’t get much purer than that.

Which NFL stadiums have heated fields?

Though there may be some heating systems that we are unaware of, there are five teams that are known to have heated fields in the NFL. And really, the quintet makes a lot of sense when you consider the weather that is seen in these areas of the United States in the winter.

  • Acrisure Stadiums, Pittsburgh, PA (Steelers)
  • Arrowhead Stadium, Kansas City, MO (Chiefs)
  • Lambeau Field, Green Bay, WI (Packers)
  • Lincoln Financial Field, Philadelphia, PA (Eagles)
  • Empower Field at Mile High, Denver, CO (Broncos)

Lambeau Field, home of the Green Bay Packers, is considered one of the innovators in this space as the Packers were able to install a heating system beneath the field. That has paid dividends in Green Bay.
