6 winners and losers of the 2023 MLB offseason

Loser: Boston Red Sox

Yes, the Red Sox successfully signed Rafael Devers to an 11-year, $331 million contract extension. They have signed Justin Turner, Kenley Jansen, Corey Kluber and Adam Duvall, among others. But they also lost a lot this offseason.

No player was more important than Xander Bogaerts. He was the Red Sox’s Plan A, B, C this offseason. Re-signing him was the priority. They came up about $100 million short in their final offer and watched their homegrown shortstop depart for the San Diego Padres.

In addition to Bogaerts, the Red Sox lost Nathan Eovaldi, J.D. Martinez, Rich Hill, Matt Strahm and Tommy Pham. Right-hander Michael Wacha remains unsigned.

Extending Devers prevented the offseason from being a total failure. But the Red Sox are the clear loser of the offseason — and chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom and team ownership saw it up close when they were booed by fans at Winter Weekend on Jan. 20.
