Ronald Acuña Jr. blasts Alex Gonzalez for trashing Braves star
Former MLB shortstop Alex Gonzalez has been at odds with Ronald Acuña Jr. over the Venezuelan Winter League but the Braves star clapped back.
What started out as a wildly fun scene in the Venezuelan Winter Leagues for Atlanta Braves fans to catch star outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. playing in his native country has quickly turned sour. After a home run celebration and an incident with his family in the stands, he has decided to stop playing for the rest of the winter season.
One critic of Acuña has been fellow Venezuelan and former MLB shortstop Alex Gonzalez, who won the 2003 World Series with the Marlins. According to Sportskeeda, Gonzalez trashed the Braves superstar by saying, “Acuna withdrew, withdrew and could not take the pressure.” This came after the decision to retire from the Venezuelan league.
Acuña fired back on Friday night, though, with a scathing indictment of Gonzalez.
Braves: Ronald Acuña Jr. eviscerates Alex Gonzalez over criticism
The Braves star posted to Twitter and unloaded on Gonzalez. Translated, the message said, “Alex Gonzalez, life must be difficult after retirement. When talking about the best SS in Venezuela nobody mentions you, your numbers are not impressive and now you want to use my name to appear. I keep playing making history and you keep criticizing from the sofa at home” before ending with a peace sign emoji.
Suffice it to say that Acuña and Gonzalez won’t be joining up as a Venezuelan group to prop up baseball for their country.
There has been so much information flying around regarding Acuña in the Venezuelan leagues as there were reportedly beers thrown at his family in the stands as they were harassed and with backlash from him admiring his work quite emphatically after a home run. But things are certainly getting ugly.
For Acuña to send out a message like that, though, he clearly feels strongly about his decision to step away and about what happened to him and his family. Braves fans can only hope that he channels that anger or energy into a superstar performance in Atlanta this season.
