Brock Purdy has been the angel sent to the San Francisco 49ers this year. When injuries took out Trey Lance early in the season, Jimmy Garoppolo took over. But when Jimmy G was also injured, that put Purdy, Mr. Irrelevant from the 2022 NFL Draft, came in.
All he did was simply go unbeaten as a starter and lead the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game.
But against the Eagles in that game, Purdy was hit in the arm while throwing and was seemingly injured. That had fans asking about the 49ers backup QB and who it is for the playoffs behind Purdy.
Who is the 49ers backup QB behind Brock Purdy?
Josh Johnson, a long-time NFL veteran and backup quarterback at 36 years old, is the backup for the 49ers. He was signed in December after the Garoppolo injury.
Speaking of Garopplo, fans were hoping that he would be available as the backup for the NFC Championship Game, but wasn’t able to be cleared. If San Francisco made it to the Super Bowl, the hope is that Jimmy G would be healthy.

With Purdy out and Johnson in, all of the quarterbacks active for the 49ers are being utilized. If Johnson were to get injured, ESPN’s Bill Barnwell noted that fullback Kyle Juszcyk is the emergency QB for San Francisco.

Johnson has spent time in various capacities with 15 NFL teams in his career and this is actually his fourth stint in San Francisco.
For his career, Johnson has thrown for 2,280 yards, 13 touchdowns with 16 interceptions and a 58% completion rate. He’s also only started nine games in his career, going 1-8 as a starter in the league. He does have rushing ability, though, with 78 carries for 425 yards and a touchdown in his career.
