Two teams fighting for Mountain West positioning meet in Logan, Utah on Wednesday night between New Mexico and Utah State.

Not only are both teams competing to get to the top of the conference standings, each team is looking to notch a quality win over one another in a mid-major conference that doesn’t have as many opportunities ahead of Selection Sunday. New Mexico is 18-3 on the year while Utah State needs a few more victories at 17-5.

This should be a high powered matchup with plenty of points on the scoreboard, let’s check out the odds:

New Mexico vs. Utah State odds, spread and total

New Mexico vs. Utah State prediction and pick

The Lobos have been good to us this season and I’ll trust them to go on the road to knock off Utah State at home. While the Aggies have the best three-point percentage in the country at nearly 41% on the year, I struggle to see how their defense will slow down the two-headed backcourt monster of Jaelen House and Jamal Mashburn Jr. Utah State is bottom 30 in generating turnovers and will struggle with the downhill attack of the Lobos offense.

When you look back at the Mountain West record for Utah State, their losses can be tied to their inability to slow down guard play, including allowing 25 points to Adam Seiko in a 10 point loss to San Diego State and allowing the duo of Max Rice and Marcus Shaver to combine for 24 points and 10 assists in a 23 point loss to Boise State.

While Utah State has the shot making prowess and a notable home court advantage, New Mexico has lost three games all season by three, four and seven points. I’m going to trust the guard play of the Lobos to stay within two possessions on the road.
